Mary Elizabeth Forrest MARY ELIZABETH FORREST was born May 09, 1817 in OH, and died March 06, 1910 in Rutland, Meigs Co. She married JAMES ELLISON BROWN August 19, 1838 in Rutland, Meigs Co. James Ellison Brown was a doctor as was his father who also was named James Ellison Brown. John's mother was MARY (Polly)FORD. Mary was probably the last living child of John Forrest when she died in 1909. Mary's death certificate indicates that she was a daughter of John Forrest of Pennsylvania and Rosina Carpenter of PA. Her obituary reads "Mary Brown, One of the Pioneer Mothers of Rutland Township and Meigs County Falls into the Sleep that Knows no Waking. Mary Forrest was born May 9, 1817, in Scipio Township, Meigs county, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.F. Anderson, March 6, 1910, where she has made her home for the last 26 years, being 92 years, 9 months and 27 days of age. She was united in marriage to Dr. James Ellison Brown Aug. 19, 1838. To this union were born 11 children, five of whom have preceded her to the great beyond-James E., Smith B., Angeline A., and an infant child. Her husband departed this life some 33 years ago. The remaining children left to mourn their loss are: John M. Brown, of Rutland, Lydia M. Braley, of Venedocia, O., Mahala J. Beckley, of Rutland, Franklin D. Brown, of Nebraska, Orinda P. Anderson, of Rutland, and Caroline E. Cutler, of Colorado. She is survived by six children, twenty-four grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Thirty-one years ago, at Grass Run, she was converted under the labors of Rev. Cephas Chase and united with the F.W.B. church. She was the last survivor of a pioneer family of eleven children, nearly all of whom lived to a ripe old age. Until about seven weeks ago she was in unusually good health for one who has so nearly reached the one-hundredth milestone. She has resided on the old home farm since her marriage 72 years ago. (The editor of The Leader is pleased to bear witness to the womanly worth of aunt Mary Brown. We can not recall a time when we did not know her, and in all this stretch of time she has always been the same patient, kind-hearted sweet-voiced Mrs. Brown. She had possibly more than the share of troubles which commonly fall to the lot of mortals, but she bore them all with most remarkable resignation. The musical ring of her voice, one heard, could never be forgotten. Her open-hearted hospitality was proverbial. Belonging to the log cabin era of our county, she did her full part toward changing woodland tracts into productive fields. She was the last surviving of that section of the township and county. On all sides fell her early friends and neighbors until she alone of a full half hundred was left to tell the story. Now that she has paid the last great debt we all to nature owe, it is to be hoped that all her virtues may be faithfully preserved in the present generation.)" Lydia died January 26, 1902 in Meigs Co OH. Her obituary states that "Mrs. Lydia Braley was found dead in her bed Friday morning about 10 o'clock by her grandson, Dayton McKee, who made his home with her. Mr. McKee had been to band practice the night before and did not get home until late, so was in no hurry to get up early. On coming down stairs he was horrified to find his grandmother dead. Dr. Chase was called and pronounced heart failure as the cause of her death and that she had been dead several hour. Mrs. Braley was the widow of the late Tom Braley who was killed some years ago by being run over by a train between Rutland and Cooks Gap. The children who survive her are Elsie, Cora and Mont. Funeral services at the Grass Run school house Sunday, conducted by Elder Weed. Burial in the Anderson grave yard. She was a sister of Mrs. Fin Anderson and Mrs. Ad Beckley."
